Raising the voice for women
The Minister for the Status of Women, Tanya Plibersek, is calling for applications from organisations to form national alliances that will represent the broad range of views of women across the country. The Australian Government will provide around $200,000 per year for each new national women’s alliance over the next three years.
“We want the voices of as many women as possible to be heard, especially those who in the past have found it difficult to engage in advocacy and decision making,” Ms Plibersek said. “The national women’s alliances will play a key role in ensuring that women become strong and effective advocates, able to engage with the broader community and influence government. “To achieve this, we are encouraging women’s organisations to come together to form alliances that voice the interests of Australian women, helping build a contemporary women’s movement.”

NSW Criminal Courts Statistics 2008 – personal violence orders per head of population increase 46%
New court statistics released by NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research show, amongst other figures, an increase of 46% in domestic apprehended violence orders per head of population granted in Far West Statistical Division. According to the Bureau Director, Dr Don Weatherburn, reports of domestic assault are stable: ‘The increase in apprehended violence orders most probably reflects an increase in the willingness of victims of violence to enlist the aid of police and courts to protect themselves from violence, intimidation and harassment.’

CALL FOR WRITER/S FOR A PAPER ON FAMILY VIOLENCE AND INDIGENOUS HEALTH: CLOSING THE GAP
Australian Domestic and Family Violence Clearinghouse
On 20 December 2007, the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) agreed to a partnership between all levels of government to work with Indigenous communities to achieve the target of ‘Closing the Gap’ on Indigenous disadvantage and, notably, to close the 17-year gap in life expectancy within a generation and to halve the mortality rate of Indigenous children within ten years.
The gap in rates of family violence between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people is a serious and significant health issue. The Australian Domestic and Family Violence Clearinghouse is looking to commission a writer/s to explore the issues surrounding Closing the Gap in family violence, given the significant contribution of family violence to the morbidity and mortality of Indigenous women and children in particular, as an objective of public health policy. The issue of family violence is often sidelined in research around and responses to Indigenous health (for example, in deference to issues of diabetes, respiratory illnesses or communicable diseases). This paper will explore the contribution of family violence to health outcomes for Indigenous people and consider means of elevating the issue of family violence in policy and health responses. The paper could discuss theories, approaches or practical responses to family violence that show evidence of having a demonstrable impact on Indigenous health outcomes.
This would be a Clearinghouse Issues Paper of 10,000 words for which the Clearinghouse would pay $7000 (incl. GST) in total. The paper will be reviewed by two external reviewers. The paper would need to be ready for review by mid July 2010, with an anticipated publication date of October 2010. The paper will form part of the Clearinghouse Issues Paper series. (http://www.adfvc.unsw.edu.au/issues_Papers.htm)
If you are interested in writing this paper, please contact Clearinghouse, supply a short CV (not more than one page) and provide a sample of your writing (e.g. reference or electronic link to an article, report or other written document). The Clearinghouse will consider applications for co-authored papers. Preference will be given to Indigenous writers or co-authors.
Contact : Rochelle Braaf, Clearinghouse Senior Research Officer (r.braaf@unsw.edu.au) by 30 November 2009 to apply.

NEW RESEARCH – Call for participants

Women over 18 years can participate who have experienced domestic violence from a partner and who have also tried to get an ADVO (successfully or not) in the last three years (either privately or through the Police). Research Project on Family Homelessness
A research project is being run by Swinburne University and Hanover Welfare Services on family homelessness. The project is looking for a total of 75 one and two parent families in Victoria who are, or have recently been, homeless to take part in a longitudinal study about what the experience of being homeless is like for them, and how it affects their ability to engage as members of society. The project is aware that many families become homeless as a result of domestic and family violence. The research has been funded by the Australian Research Council and adult participants will receive $40 voucher for the first interview, $60 for the second (6 months later) and $80 for the third (6 months after that). Please call Angela Spinney on 03 92145637 or email aspinney@swin.edu.au. More details at:
